Key Points of a Lumpectomy

When you are learning about breast cancer, you may be overwhelmed by the different surgical options presented before you.

At Desert West Surgery, we ensure that you are provided with all important information about different breast surgeries so that you know everything you need to and can feel at ease about nay procedure you need to get. Whether you are going for a lumpectomy or mastectomy, our judicious and cordial doctors and staff will make sure you get the best care possible during and after the procedure.

What is a Lumpectomy?

For women with early-stage breast cancer or ductal carcinoma in situ (non-invasive breast cancer), a lumpectomy is often the first treatment option recommended. According to the American Cancer Society, it has proven to be as effective as a mastectomy in removing and preventing the recurrence of breast cancer in early stages.

Lumpectomy may also be an option for those with locally-advanced breast cancer after being treated with neoadjuvant therapy, or a drug therapy that is given prior to surgery. There are some cases where neoadjuvant therapy shrinks a tumor enough that this surgery combined with radiation therapy becomes an alternative option to a mastectomy.

The Procedure

During a lumpectomy, the surgeon removes the cancerous tumor as well as a small amount of normal tissue surrounding it, known as clean margins. The normal tissue around the lump is removed to prevent potential recurrence. After removing the lump, it is sent to the lab to be examined.

When we perform breast-conserving surgery at Desert West, we also remove some of the lymph nodes under the arm – a separate incision is done for this. If cancer is detected in them, we may remove more lymph nodes.

Like most people who have breast-conserving surgery, you will need to have radiation therapy. You may also undergo hormone therapy, chemotherapy, or both. We will let you know of the best options for your individual case to make sure that you get the right treatment and therapy.
